Overview

Claude is a family of large language models developed by Anthropic, an AI safety and research company. Accessed via a web interface (claude.ai), mobile apps, and the API, Claude excels at sophisticated dialogue, content creation, complex reasoning, summarization, and coding. As of April 2026 the Claude lineup is: Haiku 4.5 ($1/$5 per million input/output tokens) for fast, lightweight work; Sonnet 4.6 ($3/$15) — best balance of speed and intelligence, 128K max output, extended thinking support — covering most production inference; and Opus 4.7 ($5/$25, released April 16, 2026) for the most demanding long-horizon agentic work. Sonnet 4.6, Opus 4.6, and Opus 4.7 all include a 1M-token context window at standard pricing — a major upgrade from the earlier 200K limit and particularly valuable for legal use cases like summarizing or querying long depositions, contracts, or rulings. Anthropic emphasizes safety through its training methodology, and Claude is widely viewed as a strong choice for document analysis. Like other general LLMs, it is not a specialized legal tool — citations should never be trusted without verification, and 2026 has seen significant federal sanctions against attorneys filing AI-fabricated authorities. Paid/API versions offer stronger privacy assurances than free tiers.
